Governors Island, NYC – PTM Contemporary/ New York Latin American Art Triennial presents a closing studio session exhibiting “the touch of the real-the real of touch”, a new body of work developed by artist in residency, Flavia Bertorello, exploring the changing states of materiality over time, to signify varying ranges of connection between land, water, emotions and memory; together with “Ooze”, an experimental installation encompassing both, physical and metaphorical layers to explore the nature of water, affective perception, and sound. Utilizing Architecture as an instrument while implementing a multichannel sound system, speakers leak out without the limits of the studio bridging the connection between space, body, and sound to create an expanded auditory experience. The spoken word natters with the musical instruments (bass and the guitar) tuned at 432hz.
About the Artists:
Flavia Bertorello is an Argentine-born, NYC-based artist and architect exploring the body-environment relations through a sensory processing and research-based practice that includes drawing, writing, and experimenting with materials in various formats, scales, and spatial contexts. Interested in site-responsive processes, Bertorello’s oeuvre exists in the intersection between printed media, artists’ books, wearable art, sculpture, video, and installation.
Kent Ishimoto is a multidisciplinary artist from Long Island, New York. His pursuit of understanding himself led him to explore music, longboard dancing, yoga, and Japanese tea. Through different instrumental mediums, Kent makes songs and videos about the people and places he connects with. He has composed pieces for projection installations inJapan and released two EPs. In addition to his creative projects, Kent isalso a Yoga teacher and plays live music for classes. He wishes to hone his abilities through these practices to inspire and create genuine momentsof human connectivity and understanding.
Javier Rojas is an Argentine architect and sound artist with a Master Degree in Sound Art from the University of Barcelona who researches aural architecture and implements multichannel sound systems in architectural environments. His work immerses itself in the concepts of the affective perception of spaces through sound, approaching architecture as an instrument. His production focuses on creating expanded illusory spaces for aural arts and musical performances through spatial sound design, experimental interfaces, CG graphics, creative coding, and comprehensive settings design for both art installations and live performances. Javier works as a teacher-projectionist, multimedia technician, and advisor to artists and musicians, developing software tools and creative solutions for art installations, that bridge space and sound. His current research project is on aural/spatial materiality for the doctoral program in arts and techno- aesthetics at Tres de Febrero University.
Charly Poe is a Cuban-born, NYC-based composer and performer known for his genre-blending music that combines Afro-Cuban rhythms, jazz, and electronic elements. His experimental project, Yongolailan, gained recognition in Cuba by winning the Cuba Disco Award for his debut album Sueño Tropical in 2015. In 2018, he founded Caribbean Sea Sound, an independent record label focused on collaborating with emerging artists from the Caribbean and Latin America. Currently pursuing studies in Music Production and Sound Design at Berkeley College of Music, Poe continuesto push musical boundaries with his experimental approach.
